| Research and Reference Sources on The Web | |
|
| Second graders have begun to learn how to use the automated catalog in the
library to search for books. They have worked hard to learn to identify
fiction and nonfiction by call numbers. We have observed together how to
type in a subject and find the appropriate books that are in the library.
There are sources on the Internet that can help to develop research and
reference skills, and some are listed below. | |

| Big Six For Kids | |
| | When you are doing research for an assignment, it is very important to
organize your thoughts and your work. The Big Six, created by Michael
Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz, is the most widely used approach to teaching
information and technology skills. It helps students locate, organize, and
evaulate information. This web site, created by Eisenberg and Berkowitz, is
especially aimed at students, with three different sites for elementary
through high school users. http://www.big6.com/kids

| | Many libraries-including the library/media center at Peter Fitzpatrick
School, use the Dewey Decimal System to organize their materials. If you
understand the way the Dewey Decimal System works, you will have an easier
time finding the books you need. The second graders have visited this Web
site, designed by sixth graders, which uses a story about Melvil Dewey to
explain the ten Dewey categories. http://tqjunior.thinkquest.org/5002/?tqskip=1
