Grade 6 - Vocabulary

1. contour line - a line that shows the edge of something
2. controlled pressure - how hard or lightly you press down with your 
drawing tool
3. still life - arrangement of objects for a drawing, painting, or a 
photograph
4. two dimensional (2D) -flat, has length and width
5. three dimensional (3D) - not flat, has length, width, and depth
6. landscape - an outdoor scene in nature
7. perspective - a way to show 3D space on a 2D surface
8. profile - side view
9. texture - how something feels to the touch
10. contrast - a difference created on purpose in an artwork
11. emphasis - something that is made important in an artwork
12. background - the part of a scene that is the farthest away
13. middle ground - the part of the scene that is in the middle distance
14. foreground - the part of a scene that is the closest
15. composition - the way an artwork is organized
16. community - a group of people that share common characteristics or 
interests
17. narrative artwork - an artwork that represents a story or an event
18. craftsmanship - work that shows care with the tools and materials used
19. collage - a composition made by gluing paper, cloth, etc. to a surface
20. technique - a way to accomplish a task to achieve specific results
21. pattern - a decorative arrangement of lines, shapes and colors that 
repeats in a predictable way
22. unity - a quality in an artwork when parts of the artwork relate to the 
whole artwork
23. observational drawing - a drawing done by looking carefully at the 
subject to be drawn

1. still life - a painting, drawing, or photograph of inanimate objects
2. value - the lightness or darkness of a color
3. light source - where the light originates in an artwork
4. contour lines - lines that show the edges of objects
5. two dimensional - flat, has length and width

7. architecture - the character or style of a building
8. architect - a person who designs buildings
9. composition - the organization or grouping of the different parts of a 
work of art to achieve a unified whole
