All students can achieve mathematical competence in the following areas: Number Sense and
Operations; Patterns, Relations, and Algebra; Geometry; Measurement; and Data Analysis, Statistics,
and Probability, at the sixth grade level. This can be accomplished through our Understanding by
Design program, which emphasizes skillful problem solving, communicating, reasoning, and
making connections. Students can also deepen their ability to think critically through lessons that
are geared to directly instruct them in developing their skillful quantitative problem solving and
decision making skills. Students are actively engaged in meaningful and challenging problem
situations, which are designed for their individual capacity to conceptualize mathematical
processes. Their understanding of mathematics deepens as they connect procedures and skills with
conceptual understanding and perform tasks that promote curiosity, develop communication skills,
and build upon prior knowledge.
