MATH IN THE FIFTH GRADE:
A typical day in the fifth grade includes several math opportunities!
MORNING WORK:
Each day the children have morning work to complete. On most days, morning
work is related to math. Morning work includes the following...
-computation
-previewing homework
-practicing problems relating to the curriculum we are covering or other
strands in the curriculum
-problem solving
-logical thinking opportunities
MAD MINUTES:
-reinforces basic math facts in all operations
-builds accuracy and automaticity
MATH LESSON:
-60 minutes or longer
-focuses on math strands related to fifth grade learning expectations
-supplemented as needed
MATH HOMEWORK:
-computation almost everyday!
-review and practice skills learned in class
-extension available almost everyday!
MATH CENTER:
-includes a collection of games, puzzles, and worksheets that involve math
thinking
-available to students during snack, indoor recess, and some math lessons
EXTENSION PACKETS:
-given to students who wish to do even more math
MATH LEAGUE:
-a 5th and 6th grade math team
-begins in late fall
-for students who wish to attend practice sessions on a consistent basis and
participate in 5 math meets
