The Runkle School Extended day Program (RED) is a non-profit,
tuition-supported organization housed at the Runkle School in Brookline,
Massachusetts. The program relies on parent volunteers for its Board of
Directors and strongly encourages parental involvement in the various program
activities. The program was established to provide quality after school
childcare to Runkle School children in Pre-Kindergarten through Seventh Grade.
RED has approximately 150 Kindergarten through Seventh Graders enrolled in the
afternoon program, which meets from 2:20-5:45 PM daily and has an overall
teacher to student ratio of 1:8. The program offers a Pre-K Extended Day
option from 11:15AM -2:00 PM.
RED does not discriminate in providing services to children or their families
on the basis of race, religion, cultural heritage, political beliefs,
handicap, marital status, financial status or sexual orientation.
RED is located on the first level of the school near the gymnasium and the
central staircase. On this level, the RED Office and RED Message Center,
including parent mailboxes, can be found. Additionally, this level houses the
RED Pre-K and K-2 Programs in a series of three connected rooms which are
adjacent to the RED Office. There is a bathroom area located between the
Kindergarten and 1-2 Rooms. Grades 3-4 begin their day by meeting in a the cafeteria, and they
have exclusive use of Room 303 from 3:00 – 6 PM. Grades 5-7, known as Youth Connection begin
the day in room 205. RED has many uses of the school facilities
after 2:00 PM, including the gymnasium, cafeteria,
computer lab, playground and the art room.
RED is a member of the Runkle School community. The program shares the
resources in the school as well as common concerns for the total developmental
needs of children. Although RED is independent of the Brookline School
Department, it operates under the Town of Brookline School Aged Childcare
Guidelines and is licensed by the Brookline Health Department. The program
works closely with the public school staff, administration and PTO with a goal
of maintaining a positive relationship with all members of the school community.
RED is a member of the Brookline Extended Day Advisory Committee (BEDAC).
School aged child care programs in Brookline are celebrating more then 25
years of providing care to Brookline school aged and preschool children.
RED provides a safe, reliable, relaxed, and fun after school environment. The
program is staffed by a group of caring teachers who provide a warm and secure
environment for the children. The low child-teacher ratio helps make it
possible to effectively encourage the children to respect and enjoy
each other. The staff helps the children express their anger as well as joy
and creativity in an appropriate manner. The children are offered a wide
variety of enriching activities throughout their day and are encouraged to
experience autonomy, cooperation and responsibility. The program has been a
very happy and healthy place for children, teachers, and parents for many years.
