Announcements

Dear Parents,

                           Happy Autumn to All!

Religion: It was great to see everyone at the Reconcilation meeting this
past Tuesday. Please set time aside to practice the prayers that was given
out at the meeting. During religion class we've been working on understanding
the process of Reconciliation. We've been discussing what are good and bad
behaviors and choices as we use the Ten Commandments as our guide.

Reading and Language Arts: (Reading Groups/Literacy Centers): Brendan Downey
was our reader of the week this Wednesday and he chose the story "A Child's
Glazer Bay" During our read aloud time I continue to read the chapter book
called 26 Fairmount Avenue by Tomie DePaola.
We continue with unit 2. This week we read the stories Eye Spy and Seeing.
The children enjoyed these two stories and learning how their eyes work.
We focused on comprehension skills and Steps in a Process. For this week's
literacy centers the children worked on rereading their takehome reader "Fly
High". We applied our phonics skills in our red phonics book.
I introduced 2 phonics games. The game Galaxy Blast-Off practiced the skills
for single and double medial consonants. The Racetrack Game reinforced word
familes. The children are enjoying the centers and working cooperatively.
Next week we'll be working on the phonics skills to identify the r-controlled
vowels(er, ir, ur), Plurals -s and -es (including changing y to i before
adding -es).

Grammar: We'll be learning about plural nouns and reviewing pronouns. We are
always working on reediting our written work.

Math: We worked on adding a column of four addends. By learning to group
and add four addends in different ways, the children build on what they have
learned about addition and subtraction facts. In our math red notebook we
reviewed and practiced many skills such as; place value, missing addends,
telling time 15 minute intervals), fact families and math facts. Next week
we'll be working more on subtraction concepts.

Writing: We brainstormed about all the great things we accomplished for
the month of October. They wrote their own October Calendar of Events. They
did a great job. The illustrations are wonderful, too!!! We continue to
work on all the neccessary steps of the writing process in all our writing/s.

Grandparents/Special Persons Day was wonderful and the children had fun! I
enjoyed meeting and seeing all of the grandparents and special person.

On Thursday we had a live performance by a special visitor, Ben Franklin. It
was wonderfully performed. The children learned all about his childhood,
inventions and his many accomplishments to society throughout his life.
After we wrote in our journals what they had learned and read the book Ben
and Now by Gene Barretta. Ask your child what they learned about Mr.
Franklin!

I continue to monitor their behavior charts each day. They know that it's
not a punishment but a way to reflect about their behavior/actions and how to
improve upon them. We are always discussing the importance of being good
listeners, showing kindness to one another, working cooperatively and team
effort! I appreciate All your support!

The children have been working diligently. As you can see from our daily
work which comes home, our lessons are many and varied and the curriculum is
tight. The children are working hard and putting their best foot forward as
second graders.

Just a few reminders:
1. No school on Thursday in honor of Veteran's Day.
2. Please remember to signoff on your child's homework assignment sheet.
3. Book report is due on Friday, November 20th.

I look forward to discussing your child's progress and/or what your child may
need in order to help them succeed in all their academics.
I'm still having some problems with the homework page. Hopefully, by next
week it will be resolved. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Once again, many thanks for ALL your continued support. If you need to
meet with me for any reason or have any questions or concerns please don't
hesitate to get in touch with me either by e-mail, phone or a note.

Sincerely,
Miss Ablondi
