Language Arts

Outside Reading Genre for January: Historical Fiction

Assigned: January 4th

Due Dates:    Book Approved: January 11th
                          Project Plan Approved: January 18th
                          Project Due: January 29th

Students should choose an historical fiction novel and have it approved by Monday, January 11th.  Each student will create an individually designed project based on the book and time period they have chosen.  The project plan is due no later than January 18th.  Information regarding the project plan and project guidelines may be found on the Documents page of my website.

Homework
For homework, students should be working on vocabulary exercises, outside reading, and weekly writing projects every night.  Many of the language arts assignments are weekly or long-term, such as completing the vocabulary unit exercises and reading the novel for the assigned outside reading genre of the month.

Literature

During January, our our in-class reading will include essays, poems, and short stories.

Grammar and Writing
We are progressing well with the grammar and writing goals for the year!

Sixth and seventh grade language arts will spend the next several weeks engaged in a variety of grammar and writing activities that will expand their knowledge beyond the basic parts of speech.  We will name parts of the sentence, work with parts of speech, read examples of excellent writing, practice editing skills, and write! write! write!

Vocabulary
Students are expected to work on the current vocabulary unit throughout the week.  Vocabulary words are introduced on Monday, and the vocabulary quiz is on Friday.  Please check the Calendar page on this website for current quiz dates.

 Grade 8 Religion
Text: We Live Our Faith (Sadlier)

Students have been creating a time line as they read through each new chapter about Church history.   I encourage students to make notations about the events and people mentioned on their time lines.

Retreat:
The 8th grade retreat was a wonderful experience for all!  What a terrific 8th grade class we have!

Service Hours:
Students should be working on achieving 50 hours of community service.  Approximately half of those hours should be completed by the end of Christmas Vacation.  Community service forms are available in homeroom and during religion class.  Signed forms should be given to Mrs. Trombino.

Note:  To date, students have collectively achieved more than 800 community service hours.  Several have completed all 50 hours, and several more are close to completing their hours.  Great job!!!
