Outside Reading Genre for November/December: Reader's Choice
Assigned: November 3rd
Due: December 16th
Students should Choose a novel from a favorite genre and have it approved by Monday, November 9th.
Literature
During the months of November and December we will be reading our in-class novels. Students are expected to have their novel with them every class. Students must keep all reading assignments (such as questions vocabulary, or notes) in the novel folder they were given.
Grade 6 will be reading Nothing but the Truth over the next few weeks.
Grade 7 will continue its study of Mark Twain and will be reading the unabridged version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Grammar and Writing
We are progressing well with the grammar and writing goals for the year!
Sixth grade has been completing work on sentence structure, adjectives, definite and indefinite articles, and slang versus standard English. Seventh grade has completed a "punctuation proficiency" review and is now delving into the exciting world of verb forms. Students have composed a five paragraph essay which we are using to review the concepts of:
- the writing process (plan, write, revise, best copy)
- introductions and conclusions
- paragraph construction
- editing
- formatting.
Vocabulary
Students are expected to work on the current vocabulary unit throughout the week. Vocabulary words are introduced on Monday, and the vocabulary quiz is on Friday. Please check the Calendar page on this website for current quiz dates.
Homework
Many of the language arts assignments are weekly or long-term, such as completing the vocabulary unit exercises and reading the novel for the assigned outside reading genre of the month. At other times there will be grammar, writing, or literature assignments as well.
Text: We Live Our Faith (Sadlier)
Students have been creating a time line as they read through each new chapter about Church history. I encourage students to make notations about the events and people mentioned on their time lines,.
The 8th grade retreat is scheduled for the Friday before Christmas Vacation. Details will come home once the plans are finalized. Students should be working on achieving 50 hours of community service. Approximately half of those hours should be completed by the end of Christmas Vacation. Community service forms are available in homeroom and during religion class. Signed forms should be given to Mrs. Trombino.
