Literature We have begun our study of Non-Fiction Literature. The children learned the conventions of non-fiction writing and having been recording what they have learned while reading this literature. We have begun an author study of the non-fiction author, Gail Gibbons. 2E has also begun a unit on Poetry. The children have been reading poems from many different poets. The second grade poet is Valerie Worth. Students are also writing their own poems. Math We have completed the Math Investigation, How Long? How Far? and have begun to complete the Investigation, Shapes, Halves, and Symmetry. The children are investigating geometry and the relationships among shapes. They will put shapes together to build other shapes. We will also be working on algebraic thinking this month. Students will work on activities which will help them connect concrete experiences to a more abstract experience of solving equations. These activities will reinforce students' understanding of greater than, less than, and equal signs as well as build their understanding of equality. The students will also continue to practice solving word problems using different strategies. At home, students should continue to practice basic addition and subtraction number facts(2+8, 3+7, 4+4.) Playing math games at home, such as Tens Go Fish and Turn Over Ten, will continue to help your child commit those facts or combinations to memory.
