Unit 1: Rhythm and Percussion
This unit introduces the instruments of the Percussion Family slowly, moving from spoken word to body percussion and then to instrument playing. Students will be introduced to African and Latin drumming by participating in the music of these cultures. The students will improve their ability to play a steady beat, to copy simple rhythms and to play in community, showing respect for their instruments, their classmates and their teacher.
Unit 2: Musical Olympics
This unit concentrates on the basic musical elements important to the early development of music literacy and musical enjoyment. Through the use of Olympic analogies, students will be able to differentiate between loud/soft, high/low, fast/slow, short/long and beat/rhythm.
Unit 3: Let Freedom Sing
This unit focuses on the Patriotic songs, including America the Beautiful, This Land is Your Land, Stars and Stripes Forever, Yankee Doodle, and The Star Spangled Banner. Students will learn songs, history, meaningful background on each composer, and its significance to our national identity.
