Grade 5

Unit 1:  Rhythm

In this unit, students will explore meters in 2, 3, 4, and 6 while learning music from diverse cultures.  Students will use their knowledge to create compositions in small groups.  They will use standard symbols to notate meter, rhythm, pitch, and dynamics.  Composition will be performed for the class.   Students will begin to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of their own and others’ performances, compositions, arrangements, and improvisations by applying specific criteria appropriate for the style and according to guidelines of the music and offer constructive suggestions for improvement

Unit 2: Melody

In the first part of this unit, students will discuss musical phrases.  They will learn a piece of music based on an Iroquois melody.  They will play this on various classroom instruments with expression and technical accuracy.  Students will sing songs and learn dances representative of the First Thanksgiving.    Students will improvise melodic embellishments and simple melodic variations on given pentatonic melodies.  Students will learn songs based on the pentatonic scale from Asian cultures and discuss, through song and literature, the phases of the moon.  Students will be introduced to major and minor tonalities through traditional holiday music selections.

Unit 3: Form

In this unit, students will discuss structure and form in music.  They will learn and listen to songs from various cultures and be able to identify simple musical forms, such as call and response, AB, ABA and rondo form.  Students will learn about canons through songs and dances representative of colony America.  Lastly, students will learn about themes and variations.  They will listen to and create their own variations to “Yankee Doodle” in small groups.

Unit 4: Harmony and Texture

In this unit students will learn various types of textures found in music.   Students will sing, play classroom instruments and recorders to create different musical textures.  Much of this unit will use music representative of and/or about the Revolutionary War.
