| The first part of this course will be a basic introduction to the musical
foundations of reading, listening, writing and understanding music. The
student will be able to read and perform (vocally and instrumentally)
increasingly complex rhythmic patterns in treble and bass clefs. The
student will also be able identify characteristics of melody and harmony,and
discuss them in relation to form. Students will learn musical terminology
and explore instrumental and ensemble groupings.
The second part of the course will explore music throughout history.
Composers, styles, forms and individual pieces will be studied in the
Baroque, Classical, Romantic eras. Music from the Jazz and Broadway idioms
will be explored as well. In addition, a portion of the course will focus
on rock music in the later half of the 20th century. The student will read
about, listen to, discuss, watch videos about music throughout history. The
student will be able to identify a few significant composers and/or pieces
representative of each era. The student will gain an appreciation for
musical styles and understand the evolution of western music and its impact
on music of today. | |
