Math-
We are currently working on units 10 and 12 in Math Trailblazers. We are learning about the various types of fractions and how these can be represented as decimals. We are also learning how to do computations with both fractions and decimals. In conjunction with these studies, we will also be learning how to do long division.
Science
- The science classes have just completed a very successful mini-study of inventions. As we wrap up the end of the year with a study of rocks and minerals, we'll begin with the earth's structure and the theory of continental drift. Then we'll be doing a number of highly engaging experiments on rocks and minerals. The class is also looking forward to a visit on June 7th from the Museum of Science, Boston as they present "Rock Detectives" to our class. In addition, we're excited about our upcoming field trip on May 29th to the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne Park, Rye, New Hampshire. Everyone will have the opportunity to see food chains in action and learn more about plants that are adapted to living in the harsh tidal environment.
Language Arts
-
In reading, we have been working on strategies to help us read with accuracy and fluency. We are using the weekly MCAS practice to learn how to write good open response answers and find proof to support multiple choice answers. We are also learning how to distinguish between thick and thin questions (literal vs inferring).
We continue to work on writing with clarity and meaning in the well-written sentence, moving towards paragraph formation. We've also been learning the various parts of speech and how these are used in sentences. We are revisiting the idea trait as we write creative stories based on
The Mysteries of Harris Burdick
by Chris Van Allsburg. I continue to explicitly teach the 6 + 1 Writing Traits, using Lucy Calkin's Units of Study for Teaching Writing. The students will be practicing what they have learned with short writing bursts.
Word study alternates weekly between spelling and vocabulary (Wordly Wise) with tests held each Friday. Each study has its own workbook that the students will use nightly for homework and study. We also are reading for fluency weekly, with students reading to parents on Wed. and Thursday nights each week.
