SCIENCE NEWS

The endangered species books are in their final phase. All the topics are being typed, and the finishing touches will be done next week. These include learning how to make the table of contents, writing the bibliography, and making the cover page. The projects are due on January 8 but can be turned in earlier.

There are several fun culminating activities to the endangered specie project. One includes adopting an endangered specie from World Wildlife Fund Organization. The koala was voted the choice of 5B, and the African wild dog was selected by 5A. Each student will contribute $3 toward the adoption to protect their specie. In return, each class will receive a plush animal, an adoption certificate, and a fact file card. Another activity includes the presentation of their books before the class followed by a video clip of their specie. Also, many books will be displayed in the front foyer and in the classroom during the latter part of January. Parents are encouraged to look at them while visiting the school and on January 25, (report card night). Lastly, the students will be writing acrostic poems about their specie to accompany their books.

MATH  NEWS:

A heavy emphasis has been placed on word problems and estimation. This was incorporated with multiplication of whole numbers and decimals. Division will begin after vacation. This will be followed by a project on the mean, median, mode, and range.

READING NEWS:

The students have finished reading, "The Tiger Rising"'. They will begin reading stories from their text. The first story is about an endangered golden lion tamarin. After reading the story, they will see a video clip on this specie too. In addition, they will be reinforcing strategies with vocabulary in context.

Mr. O'Brien and I were so impressed and pleased with their performance in "Why The Chimes Rang". They put a lot of effort into practicing their lines and pulled it off quite well!
