How to Study Math

 1.  Study your math notes every night.
 2.  Learn the strategies and use them all the time.
 3.  Practice examples from your notes.
 4.  Practice examples from your book.
 5.  Do the problems you got wrong on your homework. 
 6.  Study the problems you got wrong on your homework.
 7.  Practice your tables every night.
 8.  Come for extra help.  (2:20-3:30 p.m. - Tues.)   
 9.  See me during class or during snack for help.

How to Take a Math Test

 1.  Know your facts and the clue words for each operation.
 2.  Use the strategies!!!
 3.  Look at the sign carefully. Make sure if it is addition, 
       you add and not subtract.  
 4.  Estimate.
 5.  Do each problem carefully.
 6.  Compare your answer with your estimate. Make sure it 
       is reasonable.
 7.  When you are done with the test, go back and check your work 
       carefully.
 8.  Make sure there is an answer for every problem. If you don't
       know how to do the problem or are unsure of your answer,
       guess and write an answer. Never leave an answer blank.

How to Read Word Problems

 1.  Read the entire problem.  
 2.  Look for important information.
 3.  Look for clue words and circle them.
 4.  Draw a picture to illustrate the problem.
 5.  Decide on the operation.
 6.  Estimate.
 7.  Solve the problem.
 8.  Compare your answer with your estimate. Make sure it is 
       reasonable.
 9.  LABEL your answer.
       The label is usually after the words, "How many" in the
       question. 
       A unit of measurement such as yards, feet, meters...  
       is the label.

How to Study Science

 1.  Review your notes every night from the beginning of the
      lesson.
 2.  Know the words in the glossary and make flash cards. Think
      of examples and/or clue words.  
 3.  Study the pictures, captions, and charts in each lesson.
 4.  Know the answers to "What's the Big Idea?" at the beginning 
       of each lesson. 
 5.  Don't memorize! Think of examples to help you remember.
 6.  Use strategies that were taught in class.  
 7.  Study the lesson and chapter reviews.
 8.  Study your class notes.
 9.  Study the study guide, (when one is provided).
10.  Write notes from the study guide.
11.  Draw pictures to help you remember.
12.  Study the results of the experiments done in class or at 
       home.  
13.  Reread each lesson that is being tested.

How to Take a Science Test

Multiple choice
  1.  Read each question carefully.
  2.  Think of an answer first.
  3.  Then read ALL the choices carefully.
  4.  Choose the best answer.	
  5.  If you are stuck, eliminate some of the choices.  Then 
       choose the best answer.
  6.  When you finish the test, go back and check each question 
        carefully.
  7.  Make sure ALL the questions are answered. 
  8.  Guess if you are unsure of an answer. Never leave any 
        answers blank.

 Short answer
  1.  Write down all the information you know.
  2.  Think of examples from class or those of your own.

How to Study Spelling

 1.  Group words by alike vowels or consonants. 
 2.  Study words in syllables in the SORT.
 3.  Make up a short phrase.   (eighty freight cars)
 4.  Break the word into smaller words.  
      (business - Think "bus" OR a "bus business"    
 5.  Practice writing the words.
 6.  Have someone test you.

How to Study Reading Vocabulary

1.  Make flash cards.
2.  Learn a few words to help you with the meaning rather than
      the entire definition. 
      Ex. compress - to press together
3.  Look for a helpful word in the word.
      Ex. Compress has the word "press" in it.
4.  Think of an example from your own experience.
      Ex. I had to compress my papers and books, so they would
          fit in my backpack. 
5.  Draw a picture to help you visualize the word. 
6.  Study four-to-five words at a time and review them every
      night. 
7.  On a test, look for context clues that will help you identify
      the meaning of the word.
