Can I send in cake for my child's birthday?

Feel free to send in a treat for your child's birthday, but I
would prefer cupcakes, cookies, or brownies, as they are much
easier to serve, and they don't require knives, or other utensils
to eat.

Are water bottles allowed in the classroom?

Yes. Our room can be very warm, and we do not have a water
fountain in our room. Students are allowed to bring water bottles
(filled with water only) to class. Please be sure that the bottle
closes (there must be a lid of some type), to help avoid
spillage. Flavored water is not allowed, as we do not want to
deal with sticky situations if a spill occurs.

What are sign and return papers?

If your child receives a 69 or lower on a graded paper, you can
expect to see a red stamp asking you to sign and return this
assignment. This is just one way that I like to keep in contact
with you regarding your child's work.

What do all the marks on my child's paper stand for?

You will notice that papers that come home on Friday will be
marked in many different ways. Here's what some of those markings
mean-

If there are correct marks, checks, or a big c on your child's
paper, that means what we completed was correct. This was work we
either did together, or work that was used as practice. All
homework is corrected like this.

If there is something circled on a paper, that means your child
was a little stuck on that problem, and needed to fix the answer
given. Sometimes it is fixed with a teacher or para, and other
times it is fixed independently.

A paper scored with a percent (out of 100) means this was a
graded piece of work that will be used to determine achievement.

Some papers are scored on a rubric (perhaps 1-6, or 1-4). Please
be aware of the different rubrics used so that you can understand
these scores. Most writing, open responses for math and reading
will be scored on a rubric, with a 4 or 6 being above average,
and a 1-2 being below average. If you do have any questions
regarding scoring, please contact me.

What are missing assignment sheets?

If your child forgets his or her homework, he or she must fill
out a missing assignment sheet. This sheet explains where the
homework is, and requires a red stamp from me, and a signature
from you. I keep these forms, and if a child misses 3 homeworks
within one term, a detention will be given.

When will my child's papers come home?

All regular papers will come home graded on Fridays.

If a child received a "sign and return" paper, you can expect
those on Wednesdays. They should be returned to me, signed, by
Friday. A child receives a "sign and return" paper if it scores
below a 70.
