Elements of a Sheltered Lesson
· Use the student's background knowledge.
· Pre teach necessary vocabulary.
· Use visuals and contextual clues, such as pictures, overheads,
artifacts, and charts to help with comprehension.
· Use study guides, graphic organizers and outlines.
· Modify your presentation (Speak slowly, repeat, limit vocabulary and
sentence length)
· Plan topically - focused lessons that actively involve the students
by including listening and speaking activities that reinforce the
reading and writing activities.
· Model and demonstrate, with frequent checks for understanding.
· Provide varied opportunities for students to interact, ask questions
and practice.
· Use a variety of learning modes (interactive learning, hands-on
projects in theme based instruction).
· Use a variety of assessment methods.
