Based on the true story of the Rosenwald schools, which empowered thousands
of African-American communities to build schools for their children in the
1920's and '30's. This story is told through the eyes of Ovella, a
sharecropper's young daughter, who herself goes to school only when not
working in the fields picking cotton alongside her parents.
