| One can better understand the philosophy of Adapetd Physical Education if we
change the word "Adapted to Modified". Good teaching happens when we adapt
or modifiy the curriculum, unit, activity and tasks along with the learning
environment so that ALL students fully participate to their potential in a
physical education class. Federal law mandates that physical education be
provided to students with disabilities and defines physical education as the
developemnt of physical motor skills, fundamental motor skills and patterns
and skill in aquatics, dance individual and group games and sports including
intramural and lifetime sports. Adapted PhysicalEducation is modifying or
changing a physical activity so it is appropriate for the person with a
disability as it is for the person without a disability.
Our students willremain in the least restrictive environment for learning.
The least restrictive environment should be one in which, students with
disabilties are educated and can participate along with students without
disabilities. Modifications can be made for the disbled student in the areas
of equipment, prompts, cues, actions, and assessment tools and data within
the regular PE Environment. Removal from the regular PhysicalEducation Class
setting only occurs when the assessment data indicate prescribed golas
cannot be met in a oparticular setting or it the student's medical
professional recommends, in writing that the student not particiapte in
physical education to promote healing of illness or injury for more than a
four (4) week period. ( A SAtudent Participation Form may be required).
Some of the most common disabilites are referenced in the curriculum guide (
availble for veiwing upon request). Listing every possible disability is an
imposssible task. Therfore, whne a student enrolls in the Uxbridge Public
Schools with a disability not listed in the curriculm guide it will be the
goal of th eprofessional staff to design, reseach and implement
modifications, adaptations and support systems to accommodate the student in
order so that sutdent can reah their ful potential in a least restricitve
environment.
