Homework

For the rest of the year, we will have a different procedure for homework.
Homework packets will now be given out on Mondays, and returned on Fridays.
They may be turned in early, but only if you know that your child will not be
here on Friday.

Each packet will consist of a reading log, a sight word practice sheet and a
math fact paper. There should be no less than 6 books recorded on the log.
At this point most of the books on the log should be books they are reading
to you! Books that are sent home from school are books children should be
reading to you. Encourage them to use a variety of reading strategies on
words they don't
know:
  **look at the picture
  **tap it out
**say the first sound, skip it and go back
**look for words within that word
**notice if it looks like any other word you know
**think about what would make sense there

On the reverse side of the reading log will be an activity that they will
need to do based on the book that they chose to be their favorite. In
addition to this you can practice your sight words and use your math fact
flashcards. I’d also love for them to bring in any writing that they might
do at home during the week, if they want to show me!

Everyone’s schedules are so busy, and probably vary from day to day. If you
are able, try to find a consistent time for them to sit and work on their
homework for 15-20 minutes each day, as is the Taft school homework policy
for first grade. If I can assist you in any way, please let me know!

Happy reading!
