TAUNTON HIGH MARKETING EDUCATION

COOP / SCHOOL BASED ENTERPRISE GRADE

COURSE REQUIREMENTS & GRADING for School Year 2008-2009

This is the "Shop" part of the 10 credits that you can receive for this school year.  We generally spend about ½ of the 84 minutes per period doing this component.  The Marketing Education CLASS GRADE is explained on another sheet.

You earn FIVE Credits for the "COOP" or SHOP grade.  You must "work" as close to 126 HOURS PER YEAR as possible for those FIVE CREDITS.  Too much time from the CLASSROOM or SCHOOL STORE could prevent you from getting those five credits.

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS   The Mass. Dept. of Education now MANDATES that Vocational Technical Programs teach and grade students on Employability Skills.   This will be a minimum of 33% of each component of your overall GRADE below.  In other words EVERYTHING you do either in the School Store, or in the Classroom either while doing textbook work or School Based Enterprise work will be graded according to the Vocational Education Curriculum Frameworks as prepared by the Mass. Dept. of Education.  http://www.doe.mass.edu/cte/frameworks/marketing.doc

¨      25% of the COOP  GRADE =  SCHOOL STORE WORK

¨      75% of GRADE = SCHOOL BASED ENTERPRISE – PROJECT ACTIVITIES

75%  SCHOOL BASED ENTERPRISE –SCHOOL STORE  -ACTIVITIES   Spread out between the following factors:

This 75% is generated from the following:

25% Portfolio Content, and Organization – does it reflect what you are learning the skills.

25%  Skill Assessment – The Mass. Dept. of Ed. is still creating methods of assessing skills – We will use Rubrics

25%  Participation in Class planning and discussion activities.  Are you contributing to the planning?

25%  Testing – Periodic testing of knowledge of key planning decisions and the logic behind them  This will

demonstrate that you took part in the process and UNDERSTANDING IT.

SBE CLASS WORK -  MANDATORY

* PARTICIPATION in PLANNING ACTIVITIES  We plan and operate several major business activities as part of the Program.  These give you "hands-on" experience in business planning and decision-making.  You will experience various "brainstorming techniques", task analysis, time line planning, and other business activities.

Part of this grade will be improved based on your participation or lack of it.  Please refer to the to class participation guidelines on the other sheet.  They are almost identical.

          * Maintaining your SBE FOLDER with:   See note in box above about purchasing a plastic 12 pocket portfolio

* HANDOUTS -  You must keep all handouts from projects in your portfolio.  You can use them when taking SBE TESTS.  They will also help you better understand the SBE Activities.

* PLANNING NOTES  A major part of this course is the Classroom planning that takes place.  You play a major role in these decisions.  Small group discussions, and other techniques will be used.  Teams record ideas on sheets, and Flip Chart sheets on the Board.  You must write down that information and understand it.  That means you should listen when it is being discussed.

* TESTS on PORTFOLIO - You will be tested on SBE Planning.  Questions will be based on folder contents.

                * EVENT MANAGEMENT IS A GROWING PART OF MARKETING ACTIVITIES

We run several major "Business Events" each year.  To be successful, we need as many students as possible to work on those activities.

DECA Activities -  The THEME OF THS THIS YEAR is “A Connected Student is a Successful Student  Student in Marketing automatically become members of DECA.

The Massachusetts Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education, encourages Vocational Programs to involve students in Vocational Student Organizations.  The TauntonSchool District uses DECA to fulfill that requirement.

It is a CO-CURRICULAR part of the Program supported by businesses.

DECA TRAINING MATERIALS – Students will use many of the newly obtained DECA TRAINING MATERIALS to prepare for various competitions beginning in JANUARY and continuing on to APRIL.

Video Programs, Practice Tests, Practice Role-plays, and other activities will be used in the CLASSROOM to prepare students.

DECA Officers will be chosen for each class and meetings held in class to discuss SBE Projects.  The Dept. of Education Frameworks has sections on “Business Meetings” and “Parliamentary Procedure” which students will learn by taking part in the DECA “Co-curricular” activities.
