The end of the school year is approaching, but there's still a lot going in our classroom! In math, we recently completed the Data and Probability chapter, and are now working on 3-Dimensional Geometry. Ask your child what a polyhedron is, and the difference between a pyramid and a prism. As we continue to explore the Think Math Curriculum, we are also preparing for the Math MCAS, which is on May 9th and 10th.
The big news in reading is that students have started book clubs with students in Ms. DiIeso's class! These groups are in addition to their regular teacher-led guided reading groups. They are reading some classics such as Hatchet, Sign of the Beaver, and Because of Winn Dixie. This is an exciting opportunity for students to read a book of choice while working with their peers from both classes!
Book clubs aren't the only exciting part of our school day. We've been having a blast in writing, too, as students are reading fairy tale spoofs and writing their own. They are expected to apply the six traits of writing they've been learning all year: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, and Conventions. We have also added our own trait- Creativity/Risk-Taking. Wait until you read some of the unexpected twists and turns your children have incorporated into their spoofs!
This was the district's first year with our new science curriculum- Seeds of Science, Roots of Reading. Students are demonstrating their understanding of content matter quite well. In the next two weeks, we will be wrapping up our Adaptations unit and moving on to our last unit of the year-Rocks and Minerals. Ask your child how adaptations ensure survival of a species, and the difference between inherited characteristics and acquired characteristics.
Last but not least, students will be wrapping up the year in Social Studies as they work on U.S. Regions projects in Ms. DiIeso's class.
That's all for now!
