Welcome to our class website! Here's a quick overview of what we've been up to!

In Math, fifth grade students have recently studied attributes of two-dimensional figures. Students have learned to measure angles using a protractor, identify complementary and supplementary angle pairs, and identify triangles and quadrilaterals based on sides and angle measurements. Students have also learned that the angles in a triangle add to 180 degrees and that a quadrilateral's angle measurements add to 360 degrees. In the coming weeks, we will be reviewing information we've learned as we prepare for the math MCAS. Other upcoming topics include area and perimeter, computation with fractions, and attributes of three-dimensional objects.

In English Language Arts, students have begun reading a the beautiful and inspring book, Esperanza Rising, by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This historical fiction novel tells the story of Esperanza, a girl from Mexico who suffers a tragedy which causes her to move with her mother to California to work on the farms. This rich book touches upon themes of loss, perseverance, immigration, the Great Depression, worker's rights, and more. In addition to reading in Esperanza Rising, students will be completing a research project to learn about either a country of their choice or a topic related to their reading.

In Social Studies, all fourth graders are working together on studying the geograhy of the United States. Students will examine the five regions of our country, learning about the land, people, economy, and more. In June, students will be presenting projects about the various states. Stay tuned!

I am thrilled that you've come to my class website -we use it throughout the year to share news, student work, provide learning resources, and more. I hope that you'll find this to be a place that you'll come back to as the year continues.
