THIRD GRADE PROJECTS
Welcome to third grade!

Third grade is a BIG year for our students with many exciting projects. Students learn to be independent learners responsible for their own learning. This is the year they take MCAS for English Language and Comprehension in March and for Mathematics in May.

Third grade language arts instruction focuses on reading to be informed, to perform tasks following directions, and enjoying literacy experience. Throughout the year students will be reading a variety of genres. Students will read realistic fiction, biography, sets of directions, folk tales, fables and novel chapter books.

Third grade math instruction covers a wide array of concepts and activities. Students will learn strategies to solve word problems efficiently, reason to make sense, compute and communicate mathematical ideas and figure out algebraic concepts.Students will strengthen their concepts in number sense and place value to master the operations. We concentrate on multiplication and division facts. FASTT Math program, 10 minutes daily, will support fluency and mastery for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.

In SCIENCE students will investigate and keep a science notebook to record thier observations, data collections and reflections of what they experienced and learned during investigations. The units we will work are on plant and animal classification, habitats, seasons and weather, matter, magnets, space science and inventions of toys or gadgets (simple machines) we may like to use. This will lead us to a science fair at the end of the year.

Social studies will cover Colonial times and Watertown history. We will focus on our multicultural society learning about countries and people from around the world they come from. Reading maps, discussing economic and geographical principles, local government and Native American cultures help students with many opportunities to learn how geography affects people's lives.

Most of all we would love to be life long learners.
