What is CSC?
The Caring School Community (CSC) program is a research-based, K-6
program that builds classroom and schoolwide community. It provides specific
lessons and activities that intergrate community-building efforts across the
school day and throughout the school year. The program consists of of four
components designed to work together to build community in the classroom and
the school: Class Meetings, a cross-age Buddies program, Homeside Acitivites,
and Schoolwide Community-Building Activities.
Class Meeting Lessons
Class meetings are the core of the CSC program. There is a set of 35
Class Meeting lessons for grades 2-6. Class meetings provide teachers and
students with a forum to get to know one another, discuss issues, identify
and solve problems and make decisions that affect classroom climate. They
are designed to help teachers:
- Teach procedures and skills for class meeting discussions
- Set classroom norms
- Build a sense of community
- Help students plan, make decisions, and solve problems
- Encourage students to reflect on their learning and interactions
- Promotes life long learners
