DBQ PART A due Friday Industrial Revolution Power Point (Help, not homework) The Inventors (use with Friday's class handout)--- timeline of the Industrial Revolution. Monday: 13.1-
The Industrial Revolution
and America
video 1 video 2 Questions of the day: 1. What was produced at the first American factory? 2. How did Eli Whitney's inventions change America?
Here is a good example of what I was looking for:
1. Yarn. It was produced at Samuel
Slater's Mill, founded in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in 1790. Workers at the
spinning machines lived in company housing and worked for wages paid in credit
at the company store. Cloth itself was not produced at the mill: The yarn was
woven into cloth by independent hand weavers working out of their homes.
2. Eli Whitney was
the inventor of the cotton gin and a pioneer in the mass production of cotton. By
April 1793, Whitney had designed and constructed the cotton gin, a machine that
automated the separation of cottonseed from the short-staple cotton fiber, a job
that previously had to be done by hand. In 1798, Eli Whitney invented a way to
manufacture muskets by machine so that the parts were interchangeable. Interchangeable parts was a revolutionary
idea developed by Eli Whitney that
meant that for a product, say a gun,
was made from parts that were developed in factories and were exactly the same,
thus INTERCHANGEABLE. That meant that if you broke a piece of it, you wouldn't
have to buy a whole gun, you could just replace the piece. This was an element
of mass production, and a huge part of the Industrial Revolution that
completely changed how things, (guns, wagons, etc) were made. Suddenly, things
that took a long time for a skilled man to make were being produced by the
hundreds or even thousands.
Tuesday: 13.2-
Changes in Working Life
video 3 video 4 Question of the day: Why did the North and South develop differently? How did the Industrial Revolution affect the Native Americans?
Wednesday: 13.3-
The Transportation
Revolution
video 5 video 6 Question of the day: What were the two major ethnic groups employed in the building of the first transcontinental railroad?
Thursday: 13.4-
More Technological Advances
