Maureen M. Kellman
Wolf Swamp Road School
565-4270 extension 130
Mrs. Kellman has been a Wolf Swamp teacher in fourth grade since 1994. That
spring she had received a Master of Arts in Teaching. Her teaching career
has spanned the spectrum from kindergarten (as a substitute) through junior
college (summer school instructor in Composition 101, Ethnic Literature, and
Social Ethics). She also taught a year of Spanish and World Cultures at the
high school level before Mr. Kellman entered the Air Force. Becoming an
elementary school teacher came from her years as a parent to two now-adult
sons. Her involvement in their schooling helped her to discover that
her interested-in-everything, sit-on-the-floor, do-messy-stuff, learning-is-
cool attitude fits this level perfectly.
As an undergraduate, she majored in History of the Americas, with minors in
Spanish and English. Her second language is French. Reading and writing have
been passions since early childhood. She has been a writing workshop leader
in several contexts. However, she loves all subjects. It's nearly impossible
to list any topics in which she is not interested!
At Wolf Swamp, Mrs. Kellman has worked as a member of the School Council,
PTO (now the PTA), Child Study Team, Tech Team, Math Team and Lesson Study,
School Spirit Committee and district science and literacy curriculum
committees. Until budget cuts eliminated the position, she was the Parent
Education Advisor for Wolf Swamp. Currently, she is on the Wolf Swamp
The PTA is very important to Mrs. Kellman. PTA volunteers enable the class
to do things which couldn't be done without extra help. PTA money supports
the class and school with special programs, funds for materials and training,
family events, and much more. Teachers in other school districts can't
believe what our PTA does for the community at Wolf Swamp!
To encapsulate her educational philosophy, Mrs. Kellman says that her goal is
to provide developmentally appropriate, individualized and group education in
a safe and happy classroom. Students nurtured in that type of environment
grow confidently as positive contributing members of their families and all
the communities of which they partake, up to and including the larger world.
The Responsive Classroom outlook has been very influential in Mrs. Kellman's
professional development. She finds Wolf Swamp to be a wonderfully supportive
and purposeful atmosphere in which to work.
Last, but not least, give Mrs. Kellman a minute and she'll tell you all about
her two precious grandchildren and her two dear great nephews and sweet infant
The mission for this year's class will be written by the class.
The teacher's mission is to know each student and to take leadership in
creating a peaceful, safe, supportive, enriching and challenging environment
in which all of us can enjoy teaching and learning.
