Mrs.
Slote & the students of Room 29

   Dear Parents.
As part of our Geology Unit, we have been investigating different types of soil and have observed and recorded the characteristics that make up a good growing soil.  The students made careful records as we conducted water "perk" tests on each soil type.
The students would like to plant some bulbs (tulip ,daffadil) outside our window.  Through our knowledge gained by our experiments we have concluded the soil outside our window is not the best.  It rated poorly on the water perk test, texture and color.

In order to plant our bulb garden we will need donations of the following:
bulbs
top soil
potting soil
garden tools (shovels, bulb planter)

We would like to plant sometime next week before the first frost...
Volunteers will also be needed.  Let me know if you are interested

As always thank you for your support
Andy

Friday is Picture Day!!!  We will not have blocks that day.
We will have some homebase time.  we have some science activities we will be doing and soem social skills activites.  Hopefully it will be a nice day and we will go on a rock hunt.
Tomorrow I will be sending home the following handouts;
KNO form and information sheet
CORI volunteer forms.  These forms have to be filled out each year!
Think about ways in which you would like to volunteer.  Either in Room 29 or possibly your child's blocks.
I am open to any of your ideas.
More to come>>>>>>>>
Andy

Hello Parents.
We had our first fire drill today.  Please stress to your child the importance of being quiet as we line up outsideand listen for further instructions.  Room 29 had to practice one more time.
This is all part of being cooperative.
Our third graders are in the process of being assessed.  We are almost done.  Students work at different rates....so the other children are being required to work independently on various projects.  We have started our Geology unit.  Today we learned about the three parts of the earth.  Ask your children what they are.  (lithosphere, hydorsphere, and atmosphere).
Science Needs:
hammers
clear goggles
gum drops
old toothbrushes
Please bring back the green sheet as soon as you can...Sorry for the mix up.  I can't believe how many parents returned all the forms by the next day.  A++ Great Effort.  I know what its like having  had three children in school.
History and social studies classes will start next week.  Blocks should begin around Sept. 12th.
Your children may start having some homebase homework this week.  All students could review all the basic math facts.  All fourth and fifth graders should have memorized their times and division facts.  If not, please use this time.
Specials
Mon.  PE
Tues. Art
Wed. PE
Thurs. Computer
Fri. Music.
Picture Day is Friday, September 16th.
All our new third graders have made a smooth transition into Room 29.  They are an awesome group of students.  They are very independent and a diverse group and I think they will make our homebase an unbelievable community of learners.
Looking forward to meeting everyone during Open House night.  We are still not sure when this will be, but it will be wonderful to have a few weeks under our belt before we meet.
Please email me with any of your concerns.

All students need to purchase an agenda for $5.00.  They will need to start writing down their homework by tomorrow.
Also multiple forms have been sent home.  Please fill out when you have a moment.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my first day and feel energized for the new year.   Your children are the best!!

Students met their block teachers today.
Sorry no time for Friday Letters Home.
We had our first quiz in science today.  Students seem to know the steps of the Scientific Method.  We will continue our experiments with mealworms.  They arrive next week.

Tomorrow fifth graders get to experiment with different instruments with Mr. Koning.

Hello Parents.
I hope everyone enjoyed the fabulous weather this past Labor Day Weekend.  It really was glorious!  Phew..Thank goodness it finally cooled down because it was miserably hot in room 29.
Today students completed their math assessments.  We will use these assessments to place them in their math blocks.  The older students are really excited to start blocks.  Tomorrow we will complete a reading assessment.
Thanks again for all the classroom supplies.  I purchased composition notebooks for each student to use for their "morning work".  The composition notebook you purchased will be used for our weekly Friday Letters.  I will be sending a letter describing the program and the notebook next week.
