As you know there will be an indoor yard sale this Friday afternoon in the Neighborhood classrooms. Students can now bring in anything they would like to donate to sell. We also would like to have two parent volunteers to help. Let me know if you are interested.
Also, as a class we are still trying to figure out if there is enough interest to purchase anoeles as our class pet. I have kept them before in the classroom. Once outfitted they do not require much but their food which is a bag of very small crickets once every two weeks. We of course then have to maintain a habitat for the crickets, mthe crickets also if there are not given as food right away will require food (very small meal worms). At the class meeting we figured out the initial costs and came up with 2.00 per student. I don't expect everybody to want to take these creatures home, but will need someone for the summer. Think about it. It's too bad we couldn't have a guinea pig!!!
Let me know what you think.

Introduction
"The early 1960s in America were a time of hope, energy, and prosperity, a time when the United States settled confidently into its role as a superpower possessed of military might and financial clout. "It is a time for a new generation of leadership, to cope with new problems and new opportunities," the new president John F. Kennedy told the nation in 1960. 'For there is a new world to be won.' "
"Much of the optimism had gone out of American life by the end of the 1960s; it was replaced with grief, cynicism, and fear. John F. Kennedy, the president who had for many symbolized hope of America; Martin Luther King, Jr., the Nobel Prize-winning leader who had promoted nonviolence to redress social injustice; Malcolm X, the forceful advocate of black pride; and Robert Kennedy, the presidential candidate who promised peace and order, were all assassinated."
"It was a time when American maturity was tested and American capacity was demonstrated."

Hello Volunteers.
Parents going on the bus will need to arrive at school by 8:10 at the latest!!
See you tomorrow. we are so lucky to have such fantastic weather.
Andy
Hello again..
Chaperones who are driving should meet us at the Visitor Center. We will be there between 9:45 and 10:00. Students may only eat lunch outside of the museum...there is a picnic pavilion next to the bus parking lot, so my suggestion is that we get groups back to that area at 12:15, eat, and get on the bus :)
Again, I will print out a schedule for all chaperones and give to you to hand out in the morning.
Mrs. Smith

See your child's homeroom and visit their block classrooms.
You will be able to fill out a CORI form if you are thinking of volunteering in the classroom.
At this time you will also be able to sign up for a conference.
We will be needing some parent helpers for our science centers. Monday afternoon and possibly Tuesday as well. Right after lunch. (1:10 to 2:00)
Please send in $5.00 for an agenda if you haven't already.
KINDNESS is our Mindess theme this year. Piggy backing on last year's theme RESPECT. Room 29 have worked collaboratively in small groups devised a small skit to demonstrate their understanding of kindness. we had a few perforanances to day and will see the rest tomorrow. The students work remarkably well together!
Word of the Day: Concentrating on action verbs!! Tomorrow each student will get their own thesaurus to use each and keep in their cubby. I'm hoping they will make a habit of using the thesaurus and will use it when writing in other subjects.

Welcome back to school. Thanks to all of you for supplying the classroom with needed supplies. We really appreciate you help. Please send in $5.00 with your child by the end of the week, our school agendas are on sale and we would like each student to have one. I will be having an agenda scavenger hunt so it would be helpful if each student had purchased one by Friday.
Our specialist schedule is as follows:
Monday: PE 8:25
Tuesday Art 8:25
Wednesday PE 8:25
Thursday Computer/ Literacy 9:10
Friday Music 8:25
The first few days of class will be used to acclimate new students to our class and talk about the Mindess new focus on "Kindness" building on last year's focus "Respect". I have some wonderful books and activties I want to share with the students. My focus will be on bullying.
If you are interested /in volunteering this year please make sure your CORI is up to date!
Looking forward to the first day.

Mrs. Slote’s School Supply List
I'm sure you have been wondering what do I need to bring to school on the first day. The only supplies you will need on the first day is a pencil and a black and white composition book. Below is a list of supplies you can purchase at your convenience. Building 19 has binders for 1.48. These will be used for portfolios. Each third grade student needs to purchase one.
Here is the supply list:
1 black and white composition notebook ( I like these because the pages don't fall out.)
1 package pencils ( to be placed in supply closet)
1 package magic markers
1 package of three glue sticks (placed in supply closet)
1 ream of copy paper
1 pocket folder (Science) also a thermometer if possible for our weather unit
1 box of tissues
1 1/2 inch binder
1 hand sanitizer (8oz.)
Thank you for your help with supplies. Building 19 is my favorite place in the world and the family store in White Plains , New York where I picked up many supplies for the classroom at unbelievable prices.
Ashland parents have been wonderful in their support of teachers. I feel priviledged to work in the Ashland Public Schools. Looking forward to exciting year ahead!
I hope you have all enjoyed a restful and fun-filled summer. I will be in school the Wed, Thurs., and Friday the week before school starts, if any student would like to visit or help set up the room.
I can't wait to meet the new third graders, and see my old second and third year friends!
Your teacher,
Mrs. Slote
