Dear Room 26 Students and Family,
Well the month of April sure flew by and now we are entering our last full month of school!! The month of May will be just as busy as April was, if not busier!
Our community of learners will begin our end of the year assessments this month. Your child will be assessed in DIBELS, High Frequency Spelling Words, Math, and Reading. We will be testing the children on the First Grade High Frequency Spelling Words during the week of May 7th. Your child will be tested on one column a day. Please support your child in reviewing the list of 112 words that was previously sent home. You will be amazed at all the words he/she knows how to spell compared to the beginning of the school year!J
Our unit of study on plants and their importance is well underway. Last week your child planted three lima bean seeds in their own cup of soil. Part of our daily science lesson consists of Room 26’s “gardeners” checking their lima bean seeds for growth and water intake. It is rewarding to see the look on your child’s face when they see roots growing or a sprout popping out of the soil.
In math, we completed Unit 7 and started our math work in Unit 8. During this unit, children will examine a dollar bill and add the dollar to the money units they already know. Your child will learn how to make change. Our math-a-magicians will also create addition, subtraction, and comparison problems for the class to solve. Later in the unit, we will work with fractions. Please continue to work with your student on his/her addition and subtraction facts. A goal is for each first grade student to receive 18 addition problems correct in one minute and 18 subtraction problems correct in one minute by the end of the school year.
Please turn in your pink papers that went home last week regarding your child as a learner. This paper will help us during your child’s 2ndgrade classroom placement. This paper will also go in your child’s folder which will be given to their 2ndgrade teacher. This pink paper should be turned in by Friday, May 11th.
On Thursday, May 24th we will be off on our field trip to the Springfield Science Museum. This is an all day field trip so your child will need to bring a lunch and drink to eat at the museum. If you have not done so yet, please send in the permission slip and $13 with your child.
Well, that is it for now! We thank you again for all your continued support with your child!J
Sincerely,
Mrs. Saltmarsh
