Class News

Dear Room 24 Students and Families,

As we say goodbye to April, we look forward to May, as it is our last full month of the school year. I know, hard to believe isn't it? The month of May not only brings us beautiful flowers and warm weather, but also it reminds us how fast the school year is coming to a close and how much learning still is to be done!

During the month of May, your child will complete his/her end of the year assessments which include Math,High Frequency Word List, DIBELS, and Reading. The High Frequency Word List will be given during the week of May 7th from Tuesday-Friday with one column being assessed daily. Please take this time to review with your child the list of words, and hopefully this time around it will be easier since they have worked and learned most of these words over the course of the year!

In Writing, your child will work on writing nonfiction pieces which include interviewing a classmate and writing about a favorite object. In Social Studies we will begin our unit on Geography where they will learn about the place they live, the seven continents, and oceans. In Mathematics we will be finishing up Unit 8 which includes learning about the dollar, making change, and counting coins more accurately and trading up.

Also in May, we will be going on our last field trip of the year to the Springfield Science Museum on Thursday, May 24th. Permission slips have been sent home and are due back to school with money by Monday, May 7th. I will be looking for chaperones for this trip, so if you are interested please check yes.

Just a couple of housekeeping concerns:

- please practice math facts daily so that they become automatic and quick
- students should be reading at Level H or higher
- students should be thinking about including more details into pieces and becoming more consistent of high frequency word spellings and capitalization

Looking forward to a great month,

Miss Duquette
