Program Overview

Students in the Special Education program receive academic assistance to support their success in school.  Social support is also provided and students access all school opportunities with their peers.  Each student has an Individual Education Plan that details the student specific outcomes and programming supports.  When students reach the ages of 16-18, the programming gradually focuses on assiting the student to develop the necessary skills to find a suitable post graduation placement.  This process is documented using an Individual Transition Plan and follows the Transition Protocol outlined by Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth.  Students can access school until the age of 21; after which they become eligible for post graduation funding.  A student's program is either adapted, modified or individualized.  Please see the definitions below.

Adapted

Adaptations are supports provided to the students to assist their learning.  They are required in order for this student to achieve more than 50% of their curricular outcomes as prescribed by Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth.

Modified
Modifications allow for the student to be integrated into regular academic classes and the student benefits from working within the regular curriculum.  More than 50% of the Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth curricular outcomes are modified so that he/she can experience success.  "M" designated courses are given provincial credit in Grades 9-12.  However, these credits may not be recognized at post secondary institutions.  The school team determines modifications in specific subjects based on the results of clinician and medical assessments.

Individualized
An Individualized program is for students whose cognitive levels preclude them from benefiting from the Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth curriculum.  These students receive the "I" designation, when modified or adapted programming is not appropriate.  Graduation requirements may be affected by this specialized program.  Students receive a seperate diploma for the completion of a senior years individualized program.
