Homework is a time for your child to practice skills learned in school.
Homework is NOT a time for fights at home!

Check out the FAQ section of this website for ideas about organization,
homework and study strategies!

***Check your child's backpack, folders or planner EVERY DAY. Yes, EVERY
DAY.

A good estimate of homework time is 10-15 minutes per grade level.

K- 10- 15 minutes
Gr 1- 10- 15 minutes
Gr 2- 20- 25 minutes
Gr 3- 30- 40 minutes
Gr 4- 40- 50 minutes
Gr 5- 50- 60 minutes

If your child is spending more than the estimated time, contact your child's
teacher.

DO NOT do your child's homework. Do not make your child correct everything.
The teacher needs to see what your child can and cannot yet do so re-
teaching
can occur.

THINK ABOUT YOUR CHILD! If your child is an early riser, maybe the morning
is
a better time to do homework than after school. Maybe your after school
schedule is hectic, but after dinner is a calmer time in your home- that
might be a better time for your child to do homework. Some families prefer
to
have homework completed as soon as the children get home from school. That
works well for some. But some children need time to unwind and recharge by
playing outside or simply sitting quietly for a while. Avoid video games and
too much TV on weeknights.
And NO TV in children's bedrooms- ever! Really. No TV in children's bedrooms.

A good resource is "Homework Without Tears" by Lee Canter

A fun book to read with your child is "How To Do Homework Without Throwing
Up" by Trevor Romain. It's a good way to take the stress out of homework.

You can download a booklet with great ideas that parents can use to help
children deal with the daily demands of homework. This easy-to-read booklet
offers parents useful strategies for helping their children manage their
homework — from elementary through high school. Make your child’s homework
sessions a better experience for both of you!
