What will we be doing for third quarter?
The seventh grade curriculum studies World Mythology for third quarter. We
will not be analyzing the religious aspects of mythology, rather the
historical and cultural impact myths had on early civilizations. This
becomes a valuable study for our students because so many references in
literature and in our modern culture refer to mythological places,
characters, and events. Two projects will help our students become more
informed on World Mythology. The first is a research project where students
will research and report on four different myths from four different
continents. The second is a creative project where students working in
groups will develop a product and an advertising campaign to generate
interest in that product. The catch-- the product has to relate to a figure
or term from World Mythology. (Like Nike refers to a Greek god)

Will we be reading any novels?
Yes. Right now the reading classes are in the middle of a novel study. Our
class will not be doing a novel until the fourth quarter for general
English. We are looking into a literature circle for our students that
they may choose which novel they will read and analyze. Gifted and Talented
English class will be reading the play "Antigone" by Sophocles and one other
novel yet to be determined.
--------------------------------------
What projects will we do?
The Mythology project for General English will be worked on throughout the
thrid quarter. Due dates will be set both before and after we take MSA
testing.
The Gifted and Talented class is working on writing a Mystery/Suspense
Project due at the end of February. They will have an "Antigone" project--
involving research-- due at the end of the third quarter. Most of these
projects will be worked on in class.

What about MSA (Maryland State Assessment)?
The MSA test will be taken on March 13 and 14 for math and March 20 and 21
for reading. Please take advantage of the Assessment Night event on
February 28 to see samples of questions that our students will be asked to
complete during the class. Also, activities and sample questions will be
completed throughout the month to ensure that students are well-prepared for
the test.
