My child often starts a book and doesn't finish it.

You want your child to enjoy the book he/she reads. Therefore, I would not
force him/her to read a book that does not suit his/her interests. If your
child is having difficulty finding books, encourage him/her to check with the
children's librarian for recommendations on books that migh be suitable.

Consider subscribing to a children's magazine that is geared to your child's
interest. Take your child to the library and check out a few books on
different topics that your child might like. Have a variety of reading
materials available to your child.
