What is the new attendance policy?

As of June, 2005, the new policy for attendance states that if a student
leaves school before one full hour of attendance, he/she is marked as
absent for a FULL day instead of a HALF day. By state law, school
attendance is compulsory for students ages 5 through 16. A student is
counted present for a full day if a student is absent no more than one
hour of the school day. A student is counted absent for a full day if the
student is present for less than one hour of the school day. A student
may be credited with half day attendance if the student is present for
more than one hour of the school day and is absent for more than one
hour of the school day. An explanatory note from the parent should be
submitted to the school indicating the date and reason for tardiness or
absence from a regular school session. A doctor's certificate is
required in cases of long-term absence. A note should also be
submitted to request early dismissal or exclusion from activities
(i.e., PE). Chronic absences are referred to the Office of Student
Services. Parents wishing to take a family trip on school days must
request permission in writing at least two weeks in advance of the trip
for the absences to be excused and the their childrem to be allowed to
make up the work they have missed. A maximum of three days will be
considered an excused absence.
