A suggested “Parent’s Checklist”
The following recommendations are proposed to help parents work with
school staff in order to promote maximum student effort and the highest
educational standards. Please select all or some, depending on your
schedule and circumstance, to help your child focus on academic
responsibilities and improve learning and grades.
___1. Discuss each day’s classes to encourage interest and
motivation.
___2. Review the Agenda Book assignments daily.
___ a. Write notes to teachers if need be.
___ b. Have student verify assignments by getting teachers to initial.
___ c. Encourage your child to develop some homework buddies for
back-up.
___3. Provide a study site away from distractions.
___4. Check completed assignments for quality, effort, and legibility.
___5. Build incentives (rewards) into a school monitoring system.
___6. Require daily/weekly binder organization with materials that
support academic sections
and easy access to assignments and homework to be turned in for
credit.
___7. Set consistent times for meals, bed times, and study sessions.
___8. Insist that the student pack up all important school materials the
night before and
position backpack for easy morning pick up. Students without essential
materials miss
important information and work.
___9. Call or email teachers to get information; communication is key!

___10. Call guidance to set up a parent/teacher conference.
___11. Require that the student attend school regularly, be punctual to
school and to each class.
___12. If your child will be absent from school 3 or more days, notify
the school which can
gather assignments. If less time will be missed check
www.TeacherWeb.com.
Additionally, a call to a homework buddy may provide needed
information. For extended absences, notify teachers by note and help
your child turn in make-up work.
___13. Call the school if your child’s story seems strange or unusual.
Resist criticizing school
or staff before checking out the facts. Occasionally students try to avoid
responsibility
by setting up a contentious situation. We’re glad to work with you to
resolve conflicts.
___14. Always encourage reading by modeling enjoyment of reading,
reading together, pur-
chasing books and magazines. Even if a student does not have
homework, require
the student to read for at least a half hour before going to bed.
