Students in 8th grade history are instructed about debate. We teach all of the necessary terms, what the debate format looks like, and assign the students a debate project. We also invite a guest speaker who is a specialist in debate to add to their instruction. Throughout this project the students research both the affirmative and negative points for a given topic. The students gather their notes and draft speeches to support their designated side, either for or against. A select group of students who have demonstrated unique qualities are then chosen to represent Dunloggin Middle in our countywide debate which is held in the fall and spring. Our students are paired with another county school and go head to head debating a set topic. Dunloggin has been very successful in using their debate skills.
