Placement Procedures

Identification is based upon multiple criteria - achievement and aptitude
tests, portfolios, classroom observations, and parental input. It is
important that subjective sources of information such as staff judement and
parental input be combined with objective sources of information such as
standardized test scores. It is critical to look at the student's total profile.

The identification process is consistent throughout all Howard County Middle
Schools. This process begins with the screening of students who have been
nominated by staff or parents. Students are selected for participation in one
or more GT content area class based on either testing criteria or placement
procedures.

The identification process is continuing, ongoing, and systematic. Students
not identified in one grade must have the opportunity to be identified in
later grades.

Alternative Placement Procedures

To allow inclusion of students with outstanding performance who do not qualify
on the basis of the selection formula, the following placement procedures must
be followed:

1. Parents must submit such requests in writing to the GT Specialist, Mrs.
Kidwell. This request must delineate reasons or evidence which supports a
need for a review of the student's placement.

2. Upon receipt of the request, the GT Specialist will administer alternative
placement tests in the area of concern. Pending the outcome of the
alternative placement test/s, appropriate placements will be determined and
parents/guardians/ will be notified in writing.
