2008-2009 marks the 6th year at FQMS! I am looking forward to the start of a
brand new year.
The first great event will be in October - Outdoor Education 2008 - the
highlight of the sixth grade school year! Watch for packets coming home soon.
When I'm not thinking, dreaming, and breathing school, I love to spend time
with my family, read a great book, or cook a yummy meal. My husband, a
Government/AP Comparative Gov't teacher at Marriotts Ridge High School, and I
spend most of our time playing with our daughter, Kaelin, born in March 2006.
She keeps us running, laughing, and knowing how blessed we really are! We are
expecting our second, a little boy, in late May 2009.
This past summer, 2008, I returned to writing curriculum with the Howard
County Secondary Language Arts Department working on our new eGuides providing
online resources for all curriculum objectives. I also continued to work on
the Howard County Quarterly Assessments as I did last summer.
*****************************************************************************
I am certified to teach grades 1 - 8 with additional certification in
Middle Level English (6 -8). I hold a Masters Degree in Curriculum and
Instruction; emphasis in Administration and Supervision. I will be working
towards achieving National Board Certification status this year, so please
return all forms as soon as possible.
MRS. AULT'S EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY:
I believe that it is my job as an educator to bring students to a place where
they are able to not only think critically, but become critical readers and
writers. Students will be challenged and pushed to reach their highest
potential in my class. All children can write effectively and express their
ideas in such a way that invites others to participate in the experience.
Welcome to the journey!

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH CURRICULUM WAS REVISED IN 2004 TO
INCLUDE A STRATEGIC WRITER UNIT. PLEASE READ THROUGH THE
FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO BECOME MORE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR
CHILD'S UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR.
The HCPSS middle school English Essentials are categorized into strands that
flow throughout all three years. The sixth grade units taught within those
strands are described below:
THE STRATEGIC WRITER: Students will begin sixth grade with an introductory
unit to strategic writing. Throughout the school year, they will be engaging
in continuous reflection on their writing, purposeful written products, and
maintain a writing portfolio. This portfolio will follow them to 7th and then
a culuminating unit in the 8th grade.
LITERARY FORMS: Units within this strand are developed around selected
literary forms with instruction focusing on the unique subjects,
characters, themes, and methods of development associated with each. The
sixth grade biography unit helps students to discover that everyone has a
story worth telling. FIRST QUARTER
*GT students will not choose their own novel, but study THE STORY OF A YOUNG
GIRL by Anne Frank and will participate in a Holocaust Memorial Evening of
Remembrance.Students will be researching topics that relate to her story and
make present day connections through the study of newspapers.
LITERARY ARCHETYPES: According to noted critic Northrop Frye, a literary
archetype is "a symbol, usually an image, which occurs often enough in
literature to be recognizable as an element in one's literary experience
as a whole." Students examine common themes in literature and analyze how an
author creates tone, mood, style, and motifs.
*GT students will be reading WATERSHIP DOWN by Richard Adams.
LITEARY ORIGINS: The literature within this strand enables students to link
the past with the present and begin to understand the literary roots of
many contemporary stories. At the same time, students should develop an
appreciation for the imagination, customs, and beliefs of people from
earlier and much different times and places. The sixth-grade folklore and
legends unit includes folk narratives and tales as students investigate the
cultural heritage of various groups.
** GT students will be studying European folklore and legends as well as royal
history through the study of the classic novel PRINCE AND THE PAUPER by Mark Twain

Curriculum Documents revised July 2004 and aligned with the Maryland Voluntary
State Curriculum.
