Updates

Update 10/20:
There is a larger than normal number of students out this week due to illness.  As a result, I will add more information to my TeacherWeb page each day under 'homework."   Here, I will explain what was done in class each day and upload documents electronically under 7th and 8th grade uploaded files.  I am making this information available in case any student is feeling up to doing work at home.  Students will still have the opportunity to make the work up when they return to school.

Update 10/20:
Mrs. Watt's 7th grade Life Science students will have a quiz 10/22 on the microscope.  An optional study guide can be found under "7th grade uploaded files" and an interactive online microscope parts quiz can be found under "links" on Mrs. Watt's Teacherweb.

Update 10/19:
Mrs. Watt's 8th grade Physical Science students will have a quiz this week on: forces, gravity, friction, and Newton's 3 Laws.  An optional study guide can be found under "8th grade uploaded files."  In addition, students should study their class notes and Chapter 5: sections 2,3,4 and Chapter 6: section 2.

Update 10/15:
7th grade Cell City Projects are due Tuesday 10/20.  Students should attach their analogy worksheet and grading rubric to their projects.   Additional copies of the project packet can be found under "7th grade uploaded files."

Update 10/2:
Mrs. Watt's 8th grade Physical Science students will have a quiz on
Measuring Motion. A and E will take their quizzes on Tuesday 10/6 and B and D will take their quizzes on Monday 10/5. An optional study guide can be found under "8th grade uploaded files." Students should also study chapter 5 section 1 of their textbooks, class notes, and graph analysis drawings.

Update 9/21:

Physical Science students will have a quiz this week on forms of energy, energy conversions and the parts of a well designed investigation. D and E will take their quizzes on 9/23 and A and B will take their quizzes on 9/24.  An optional study guide can be found under "8th grade uploaded files" on teacherweb.  Students should also study chapter 9, sections 1,2 and chapter 10, section 2 of their textbooks, class notes, and the parts of a well designed investigation.

Life Science students will have a quiz this week on 9/23. The quiz will cover the six characteristics of living organisms and the parts of a well designed investigation. An optional study guide can be found under "7th grade uploaded files" on teacherweb. Students should also study the Chapter 2 directed reading worksheet we went over in class, class notes, and the parts of a well designed investigation.

Update 9/7:
Welcome to Science!

We will be investigating forces and motion during the first quarter of
Physical Science as well as developing science skills and processes.
Topics will include:  energy transformations; transfer of heat energy;
speed, velocity, acceleration; Newton’s three Laws of Motion;
forces, gravity, friction; Law of Conservation of Energy; work
and simple machines.
We will be investigating the nature of living things during the
first quarter of Life Science as well as developing science
skills and processes.  Topics will include: characteristics of
living organisms; cell theory, cell parts and functions; microscope
use; cell division; transfer and transformation of energy and matter;
photosynthesis, cellular respiration; and sources of energy for cells.
The coursework will be built upon the Howard County Public
Schools Middle School Essential Curriculum.  As a part of the curriculum,
students will be required to complete quarterly Howard County
assessments that measure their mastery of the curriculum.
I strive to create a supportive learning environment in which students
will feel free to challenge themselves, explore ideas and know that
they are valued, respected members of our classroom.  In order to
create a safe and effective learning environment, I have established
routines and policies, which have been discussed in class and in the syllabus outlining this year’s policies and expectations. Additional copies can be downloaded from my TeacherWeb page.
I will be using both TeacherWeb and TeacherEase this year.  TeacherWeb
is where you can find a copy of the class syllabus, vocabulary lists, nightly homework, class documents and useful links.  TeacherEase is an online
grade book, which will allow families to check student progress.  I strongly encourage students to take ownership of their learning and actively
check TeacherEase themselves.  I will also use TeacherEase as a
communication tool with home.
I value your support and assistance as we work in partnership towards
a meaningful, successful year for your child in science. Please don’t
hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
