Ultimate Frisbee Study Guide
IMPORTANT HISTORY & INFORMATION
o Ultimate Frisbee originated in Maplewood, New Jersey in 1968. o Ultimate Frisbee uniquely combines high competition with the spirit of the game. o "Spirit of the game" means no referees, honest playing and positive spirits on and off the field. o Ultimate Frisbee is a fast-paced, highly energetic noncontact sport that isn't for the lazy or pessimistic.
FACTS
oThe Field -- A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. o Initiation of Play --point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. o Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score. o Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.
oOnly ONE person is allowed to defend the person with the Frisbee
oThe playing marking the person with the Frisbee must stand THREE FEET away o Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. oThe team who did not score must TAKE a HIKE after each goal oWhen a girl scores, TWO points are awarded. o Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. o Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. o Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. oPULL: like a kickoff in football, the throw that begins the game, and begins each possession after a score. oMARKING: playing defense/guarding the person who is in possession of the Frisbee
