PHYSICAL EDUCATION HANDBOOK - 2008 - 2009 PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Ms. Bales & Mrs. Harcum Dear Parent/Guardian, Welcome to a new and exciting school year! Our goal, in Francis Scott Key's Physical Education Program, is to provide your child with a wide variety of skill experiences in a full range of activities, allowing for divergent skill levels and interests within each class. This strategy promotes successful learning experiences in a safe and enjoyable environment. In order for our program to be successful, we need the continuous support of each parent and child. We ask the parents carefully review our physical education policies and regulations with their child. Thank you. POLICIES AND REGULATIONS I. NEEDS FOR CLASS - All students must dress in gray and maroon Francis School Key Physical Education uniforms, along with white socks and athletic shoes. Uniforms will be available for purchase during your child's P.E. class. Gym uniform payments must be made in cash. UNIFORM COSTS: FSK SHIRT S-XL _approx. $8.00__ XXL __approx. $10.00_ FSK SHORTS S-XL _approx. $8.00__ XXL _approx. $10.00_ It is suggested that all students write, in permanent marker, their last name on the front of the shirt, and the waistband of the shorts. This will help prevent loss or theft of uniforms. If a student would like to provide their own P.E. Uniform, this is acceptable, if the student finds Burgundy (not red), athletic shorts, and a Gray T-Shirt (not a Polo/Collared Shirt). A large portion of each child's grade is preparation. Being prepared means having your shorts, shirt, shoes and socks each day. If a student frequently comes to class without these materials it will reflect in his or her grade. It is suggested that students take their uniforms home each Friday, wash them, and return them back to their gym locker when they come to class the following Monday. II. LOCKERS AND LOCKER ROOMS - Both a girls and a boys locker room are available for students' use during physical education. Each student will receive a locker for storage of their uniform, socks, athletic shoes, cold weather gear (sweats), deodorant, and a wash cloth. Glass containers are prohibited! Each student is also assigned a Master Lock that must be returned at the end of each semester. Students will be charged a fee of $6.50 for replacing a lock that is lost, stolen or damaged. Students are assigned their own lock and locker so it is not necessary to share with anyone. Please remind your child NOT to give their combination to friends and to lock their lock every day! Located in each locker room are lavatories. Students are encouraged to use the lavatory at the beginning or end of physical education class. Aside from emergency situations, students are not permitted in locker rooms or lavatories during class time. Horseplay in the locker rooms is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Students are expected to act responsibly and respect their classmates and their classmates' belongings. Students will be expected to follow all locker room rules and procedures and help to maintain a clean and safe locker room environment. Failure to do so will lead to the loss of locker room privileges. Students who act irresponsibly and lose locker room privileges will be expected to complete written work each day while their classmates are changing for class. III. CLASS PARTICIPATION and MEDICAL EXCUSES - All students must participate in physical education class unless they are excused by a registered physician. A physician’s note must state the nature of the disability and the length of time the student is to have limited or complete rest. A note from a parent/guardian is acceptable for a maximum of two consecutive PE classes. All notes must be presented to your child’s PE teacher at the beginning of the class. However, when your child is not feeling well, but is able to attend school, we ask that you encourage participation on a limited basis rather then miss the day’s lesson. IV. ASSESSMENT – Student’s grades will be determined by his/her performances in the following areas: a. Daily Preparation (PE Uniform and PE notebook) b. Daily Participation c. Skill Development d. Written Assessment If you have any questions or concerns regarding our program, please feel free to contact your child’s PE teacher at 410-396-1503. Thank you, Ms. Bales and Mrs. Harcum. |
