Classroom and Laboratory Rules
Parents,
Thank you for taking the time to read and discuss Biology Safety with
your child. Please send me your E-mail address. Mr. Kincaid's E-Mail
address is Richard_Kincaid@hcpss.org
Additionally please print out a copy and get it signed and returned to
Mr. Kincaid by next class. Thank you!
This science course will allow us to do different experiments both in
the classroom and outdoors. When lab's are done properly, they are
safe. When in the lab, always be aware of potential harm to yourself
and others. Activities have been written so that there are
instructions to help you to do each of the activities. In addition to
following the instructions properly, you must observe the following
three classroom rules. Additionally (Also read deportment) read the
deportment found on the home page. We have also given your child
notice of a lab insurance fee against accidental breakage of
equipment please read that form carefully. This Lab Fee is highly
suggested by the entire science department at Glenelg.
1. Coats and jackets must be removed when you enter the lab and
placed in a safe area such as on your chair. Any loose or dangling
clothing, jewelry, or long hair must be secured. Lab aprons should be
worn when at the lab stations. STUDENTS WITH OPEN TOED SHOES AND OR
UNCOVERED FEET WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE LAB. A ZERO WILL BE ISSUED,
THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO SIT OUT THE LAB. If outside dress
appropriately for the activity and the weather conditions.
2. All non-science materials must be placed out of the way. When
outside take only the supplies and equipment that you will need. The
room will be locked up, make sure your valuables have been put away.
3. Equipment and chemicals should be used only in the classroom and
only when the teacher is present.
4. Use chemicals only from clearly labeled containers, and read the
label twice, carefully, before taking any chemical.
5. Unauthorized experiments or tampering with materials are
prohibited. Mix chemicals only according to instructions.
6. Handle all chemicals carefully and in the proper manner. When
handling lab materials with your bare hands; use a spoon,or eye
dropper,a wooden splint, a pippet, a piece of paper or specialized
glassware to move chemicals.
7. Keep the caps, covers, and stoppers on chemical containers after
usage.
8. Keep all chemicals away from your eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
9. No eating or drinking of any kind in the laboratory. Keep possibly
chemical-contaminated hands away from your face. Wash your hands
thoroughly at the end of each lab period.
10. Your work area should be left clean at the end of each period.
You should wash all glassware and clean all equipment after use, and
return it to its proper storage area prior to leaving the lab area.
11. Report any accidents to the teacher immediately.
12. If any chemical is spilled or spattered on you, flush the area
with cold water immediately and notify the teacher at once.
13. Wipe up spilled chemicals with a wet sponge or damp paper towels.
Rinse and dry the area well and wash your hands.
14. Use a dustpan and brush to clean up broken glass or spilled dry
chemical.
15. Deposit waste materials in the trash containers. Sinks and drains
are not to used as wastebaskets.
16. SAFETY GOGGLES MUST BE WORN whenever you use acids, bases, other
possibly dangerous chemicals, or any kind of flame, burner, or heater.
This is just good common sense. If you wear contact lenses, consider
wearing regular glasses instead during the lab to avoid the
possibility of fumes or vapors getting trapped between the contact
lens and the eye.
17. When heating chemicals in a container, keep the open end pointed
away from you and away from others near you. Never heat a stoppered
test tube or any closed container.
18. Do not heat any glassware that is not of Pyrex or Kimax
heat-resistant glass, or that is not designed for heating; e.g. don't
heat baby food jars, graduated cylinders, glass plates, and wide-
mouth bottles.
19. Familiarize yourself with the safety equipment materials found in
the following Labs:Lab Safety, and Lab Equipment. In the room the
teacher will point out to you: fire extinguishers, fire blankets,
showers, eyewash fountains, and safety procedures, the Hazardeous
Materials Box and the Broken Glass Waste Bins.
You have role played fire procedures and learned techniques for
putting out fires. The best method is STOP,DROP, AND ROLL. You have
drawn yourself a diagram of not only the classroom and the location of
each of the safety features within the lab, but you have been given
instruction on how and where to go in case of emergency evacuation
occurs. FAILURE TO REPORT OR LEAVE THE SAFE AREA YOUR TEACHER HAS
DEVISED WILL CAUSE A SERIES OF ADMINISTRATIVE CONSEQUENCES.
20. All burning matches, splints, etc. must be extinguished and wet
before, disposal. All books, papers and other flammable materials
must be kept away from flame and heating units.
21. If there is an accidental fire, NOTIFY THE TEACHER IMMEDIATELY. A
fire extinguisher, fire blanket, or wet sponge or towels may be used
to put out the flame. Special techniques may sometimes be needed-
special instructions in the lab directions should be noted.
22. Never tilt, jerk, or rock back on your desk chair or lab stool;
keep all the legs on the floor. Sitting or lean on the lab bench or
lab table is prohibited--contamination and illness can occur.
22. Throwing of objects, pushing, shoving, running, tripping,
squirting, horseplay, nor any other activity that could cause damage
or injury is prohibited. Remember Classroom Rules 1-3
23. Keep out of authorized personal areas unless instructed to do so.
24. Computers will be used in this classroom from time to time. Obey
the computer contract and the internet policies that you have signed.
25. Treat all animal species and sepecimens with respect.
