SCHEDULE OF CLASSES:
2007-2008 1st pd Biology Honors 2 pd Biology Honors 3 pd Biology 1 4A/4B Planning 5th Biology 1 6th Biology 1
EXPECTATIONS:
I have a very profound respect -- even reverence -- for life. Cultivating such a respect will not only enhance your child's appreciation, enjoyment and success of the courses. The courses will put them more closely in tune with the instructor's attitude. That's never a bad thing. Hopefully Biology this year will help students to make better decisions in the future.I will encourage your child to be a self-starter rather than a student who expects to be spoonfed the course conetent.I HAVE FOUND THAT PARENTS need to be informed. Parents need to be aware of HOMEWORK BUT UPCOMING EVENTS. This need helps KEEP your child ACCOUNTABLE and SUCCESSFUL WITH THE CLASSES.!! To the parents HOW I'M ATTEMPTING TO HELP YOUR CHILD TO SUCCEED IN BIOLOGY. I'D LIKE to DEVELOP A FELLOWSHIP WITH YOU. I'm trying to help your child to be an active life long reader and learner. I understand that all students have various science backgrounds. In science I want students to strengthen their decision making skills.I want them to be aware of unreasonable risk verus reasonable risk in today's society. Students of Biology I want to improvement in understanding of the scientific method as a problem solving strategy. I only ask all my students give me their very best and do unto other's as you would have them do unto you.I will try to help develop students powers of observation and a willingness to entertain new ideas, while absorbing the details. The student needs to look beyond just facts. I WANT YOUR CHILD TO TAKE TWO OR THREE OBJECTIVES FROM EACH CHAPTER AND SEE IF THEY CAN MAKE CONNECTIONS RATHER THAN MEMORIZING THE MATERIAL. You need to know that in a Prefix abd Suffix list of Biology terms need to be memorized and repeated regularly. They will be quizzed on 12 words every week. Grade Record Sheet: Keep up to date always.Biology Labs: Pre-Labs will ask that the student copy down the objectives, the materials and the procedures at home. I want them to understand the lab before it begins by reading the lab the night before to help them develop their thoughts to ask questions before we begin.
See the HOME PAGE go to Materials' Checklist for specific items.
Every day a student needs to be prepared to learn their materials in class.
Textbook, science notebook, pencils, ink pens, paper, ruler, calculator,
coloring pencils. I have found that students who come to class with their
materials are prepared to learn and they generally do their homework.
Listed below are some general things to think about.
# TEXTBOOKS: NEED TO BE KEPT COVERED AND AS FREE OF DAMAGE AS POSSIBLE. LOST
TEXTBOOKS AND DAMAGED TEXTBOOKS WILL REQUIRE A $75 CHARGE.
# NOTEBOOKS:
Every Biology Student is required to keep an individual science notebook.
The science notebook will be checked periodically for a grade. However, even
if the notebook is not being checked we have found that students that do
poorly in class are almost always disorganized. This is because they lose
papers that they have completed, or they lose papers that need to be done for
homework. Also, when it comes time to study for the test they have trouble
finding notes and classwork to study from. Thus, rather than learning from
all of their assignments they end up relying only on the a study guide which
is difficult to complete if you can find your notes.
1. The notebook will not be cleaned out until the end of the semester so it
needs to be fairly large. Probably 1 1/2 inch rings or larger.
2. It should be a hardback binder with pockets to hold loose papers.
However, any loose papers should quickly be hole-punched and put into the
rings.
3. The order of the notebook is as follows: 1)Teacher Expections, 2)Science
Grade Sheet, 3)Drills (included are notes, classwork activities, or
handouts), 4)Labs with the safety contract being the first item in this
section then the labs in order of oldest to newest, 5)Homework (Textbook
assignments, projects etc.)
3. Some students find it helpful to have a personal 3-hole punch that hooks
into the rings of their binder.
4. Each section should be arranged chronologically from oldest to newest.
Please check your childs notebook at the end of each week until he/she
begins to keep it organized on his/her own. You can then review assignments
that were done for the week and keep up with how he/she is doing in class.I
WOULD LIKE YOU TO CHECK YOUR CHILD'S GRADE RECORD SHEET to see if they are
keeping a running track of HIS/HER grades. Most of the time I will have by
the end of the quarter 25-30 graded or checked items. This may take only a
couple of minutes but it will HELP GUIDE THEM TO SUCCESS
AGENDA BOOKS or Planners:
Students are each given an agenda at the beginning of the school year and
they are supposed to record all assignments in their agendas. If the agenda
islost or stolen, a new one may be purchased in the school store for $6.00.
Students who routinely miss homework assignments or say they have no
homework may benefit from what we call "agenda mode." This is where the
student must get a teacher signature at the end of each class showing that
the teacher has approved that the assignments written in the agenda are
correct. The parent then signs the agenda again when the student shows
him/her that the assignmentis completed. Sometimes parents and teachers can
even send notes to each other through this technique. The key, however, is
that the responsibility for getting the teacher signature must rest on the
student. When this technique has been most successful is when there is some
sort of onsequence if the student does not get the signature. This is a
great way for parents to keep up with whether or not their child is
completing his/her assignments.
BIOLOGY TUTORING:
Aside from the after school help, I am available most mornings from 7:00
a.m.-7:30 a.m. I am also available every Wednesday after school from 2:15-
2:45 PM free individual tutoring can be gotten. Please have your child
contact me to schedule tutoring sessions if he/she needs additional
explanation on specific topics. Also tutoring from the National Honor
Society Students is FREE, see guidance to sign up.I'm available if asked to
help afterschool. I WILL AT SOME POINT IF THE CHILD IS STRUGGLING REQUIRE THE
STUDENT TO COME IN FOR AFTER SCHOOL HELP.
STUDYING FOR TESTS AND QUIZZES:
There are many strategies for helping your child to study. Here are just a
few.
1. WEBSITE: Visit http://TeacherWeb.com/MD/GlenelgHighSchool/Kincaid,R my
biology website on the to find tutorials, online quizzes, flashcards, games
and .
2. Writing Flashcards: Many times, students who struggle with tests and
quizzes do not know how to pick out the useful information from their notes
and get rid of the "extra" fluff. Help your child look through his/her
notes and write flashcards to study from. These flashcards should have a
question on the front and the answer on the back. They can then go through
them and sort them into piles of the questions they know and the ones they
need to study a little more. Eventually, they should study until all the
cards are in the pile of questions they have mastered.
3. Quizzing them verbally: Look through your childs notes and quiz him/her
verbally on the information there. Dont worry! Even if you get some
information confused, it would be good for the student to then explain the
correct information to you and become a teacher.
4. Have them be the teacher: We retain 97% of the information we teach
other people. Have your child explain and "teach" particularly difficult
concepts to you and then write you a quiz to see how much you learned from
him/her.
5. Come up with mnemonic devices or songs to help memorize facts. (We TRY
do this in class IN SOME WAY OR FORM)
6. Encourage your child to review nightly rather than cram before the night
of the test.
7. A biology student needs to read their textbook nightly because a good 90%
of all test come from the Biology Textbook!!!
EMAIL CONTACT:
I would recommend that parents who want updates once every week email
me. My email is GHSRAK@aol.com or Richard_Kincaid@hcpss.orgYou can also check
your childs grades at this site, they are usually updated every week and a
half. . I will not pass
along detailed grade information through email but I can indicate whether
your child has been fulfilling the obligations necessary and whether or not
you need to contact me by telephone or checking the GRADES ICON.
1.To guide and motivate my students in attaining an 80% proficiency or
better on the Maryland State Assessment Test for biology.
***Maryland State Core Learning Goals 2009-2010. These Biology Goals should
be used as a checksheet for attaining at least 70% proficiency. CHECK OUT
THIS SITE AT

2. To achieve more effective modes of communication with my students and
their parents. It is my hope that you and your child also will use this site
to help the both of you to achieve confidence and success. Go to this site
if you are interested in how schools are responding to the role of
communication and raising standards and performance of students.
