Peer Mediation

Howard High School Peer Mediators 2007-2008

What is Peer Mediation?
  • A confidential process for resolving conflicts.
  • An in-school meeting where participants have the opportunity to talk through their conflicts with the help of trained student mediators.
  • A method of communication whereby mediators facilitate positive social interaction to promote understanding, empathy, and problem solving.
  • A process where the disputants develop their own solutions to the conflict with the help of peer mediators

Who is involved?

  • The peer mediators, students, school counselors, and administrators

Who are the Peer Mediators?

  • 10th, 11th, and 12th graders who are committed to making their school a peaceful and respectful learning environment.
  • Students from diverse backgrounds who represent a variety of experiences.
  • Students who have received intensive training in communication, problem- solving, empathy, emotions, conflict resolution, and mediation skills.

Where do mediations take place ?

  • Typically Mediations take place in the Counseling Department. 

What kinds of conflicts can be mediated?

  •  Teasing
  •  Bullying
  •  Harassment
  •  Name Calling
  •  Rumors
  •  Friendships
  •  Misunderstandings
  •  Threats
  •  Any interpersonal conflict that interferes with learning

How do I make a request for mediation?

  •  Come to the Guidance Office for a Peer Mediation Request Form.
  •  You may also download a Peer Mediation Request Form from this site.
  •  Please return the completed form to the Counseling Department or to Mrs. Sutter.
