Achieving Balance:  Making Healthy Transitions to College

Howard County high schools recognize the importance of high school students making healthy transitions to college through achieving balance between academic demands, social connections on campus, maintaining strong support systems and relationships at home, and identifying and accessing important resources at college.
This event, hosted by Active Minds, will provide an opportunity for parents and high school students to hear about transition challenges, available college resources, and tips and tricks for maintaining a healthy balance during the beginning college years.
The key to achieving true balance is beginning the process now!

Military Information Night
River Hill High School
will be hosting a county-wide Military Night on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The presentations will take place in the Media Center and representatives will have tables in the Cafeteria. Representatives from the five Military Academies, private and state-sponsored military colleges, ROTC, and the Howard County JROTC programs at Atholton, Howard, and Oakland Mills high schools, and enlistment recruiters will be present. In addition, representatives from the offices of Senator Cardin and Congressman Cummings will be on hand to discuss the nomination process for the Military Academies. We will also have representatives of the Military Academies who will discuss their application processes.  Students of all ages are welcome to bring their parents or guardians. Save the date!!

SAT/ACT Practice Test

The Princeton Review Assessment (PRA), an SAT/ACT combination test, is designed to help you determine which test is best suited for your abilities. This event also allows you the unique opportunity to take a practice exam under actual testing conditions.

2010-2011 Registration Kick-Off!


Hard to believe that our students are selecting courses for the '10-'11 school year! The process began in December before the holiday break with guidance lessons “The Lion’s Guide to Course Registration”. Ms. Grieve will present to current 9th grade students the first week in January.


All parents are invited to attend our Lions' Night: Essential Academic Planning event.

An Elective Fair will be held during lunch shifts in the atrium, on January  26th and 27th.


Counselors will meet with all students to review their course registration form in February.

  • January 25th- Students will receive a Course Catalog and Course Registration form in their homeroom.
  • January 26th & 27th- Teachers will make course recommendations
  • January 28th-  Course Registration form due to your child’s English teacher. Please be sure to use The Catalog of Approved High School Courses to review course selections for the upcoming school year. Please note course descriptions and prerequisites.
Please note that seven credits must be requested on the course registration form; this applies to upcoming seniors as well.

In addition, students must list 3 courses to be used as alternates in case an elective chosen is not available or there is a scheduling conflict. PLEASE be sure that your child selects 3 alternates that they would seriously like to take. There is a chance that we will look to their alternates if there is a conflict!

 

Concerns about a course recommendation? Please contact your child’s school counselor to proceed with a course placement review. This process must be completed by March 31st.

Financial aid for college

We are pleased to announce that Ms. Velma Green, Financial Aid Specialist with The Maryland Educational Opportunity Center, will be available to meet with parents and students at Howard High School to offer information and/or assistance regarding financial aid for college.

Ms. Green will be at Howard High on December 7, 17, and 21 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.  Please call Mrs. Sharon Flanagan, Guidance Secretary, or your child's counselor to schedule an appointment at 410-313-2871.

Appointments may also be scheduled in January and February on Fridays 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

The fourth annual County-wide NCAA night will be hosted by Long Reach High School. A brief overview of NCAA eligibility rules along with Compliance Officers Lindsey McDonnell, Towson and Kathy Railey, Stevenson University, a student athlete panel and a parent panel will be available for questions. All county residents are encouraged and welcome to attend.

NOV. 15 AND DEC. 1 COLLEGE DEADLINES: 

Please allow 30 school days for Transcript Packets to be processed and ready. If your student is intending to apply by Nov. 15 or Dec. 1 to his/her schools and has not yet submitted a transcript packet to Student Services, please have them meet with their school counselor immediately.

Arts College Night

The HCPSS Fine Arts Advisory Council is sponsoring Arts College Night, an evening for all parents and students, especially those currently in 8th-11th grade, interested in pursuing a higher education in Theater, Dance, Music or the Visual Arts.  This event will take place from 7pm to 9 pm on Monday, October 11, at Long Reach High School, Old Dobbin Road in Columbia.

 The event will include panels focusing on preparing for college, the admissions process and collegiate expectations. Professional artists will share their insights and experiences to offer students different perspectives on a career in the arts.
