| WEIGHT TRAINING I - ESSENTIAL CURRICULUM
NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical activity is critical to the development and maintenance of good
health. The goal of physical education is to develop physically educated
individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a
lifetime of healthful physical activity.
A physically educated person:
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns
needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles,
strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of
physical activities.
Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical
fitness.
Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects
self and others in physical activity settings.
Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-
expression, and/or social interaction.
GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS OF THE CONTENT STANDARDS
Goal 1. The students will demonstrate the ability to use competency in
various methods of weight training and conditioning.
Objectives - The students will be able to:
a. Define and understand the following principles of weight training:
overload, progression, specificity, aerobic, and anaerobic.
b. Describe and distinguish among the various methods of training: circuit,
super sets, pyramids, power, and target heart rate. This information will
provide the basic foundation for all training and conditioning activities.
Goal 2. The students will demonstrate the ability to understand muscle
function, proper nutrition, and physiology of exercise.
Objectives - The students will be able to:
a. Identify the muscular skeletal structure of the human body and understand
the basic physiology connected with training and conditioning. Nutritional
concepts will be integrated into daily practices.
b. Use cognitive information to understand and enhance workouts, e.g.,
differentiate between muscular strength and muscular endurance.
Goal 3. The students will demonstrate the ability to apply safety guidelines
and concepts to specific training activities.
Objectives - The students will be able to:
a. Perform the highest level of safety during participation in any form of
weight training or conditioning. Expectations for safety standards will be
established on a personal and class level.

participating in any type of conditioning program.
Goal 4. The students will demonstrate the ability to apply training theories
to daily workouts.
Objectives - The students will be able to:
a. Achieve a health-enhancing level of physical fitness during any of the
courses.
b. Maintain a workout log or journal. Expectations for studentsí fitness
levels during each course will be established on a personal basis.

data and feedback to further personal goals.
Goal 5. The students will demonstrate the ability to have responsible
personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.
Objectives - The students will be able to:
a. Develop self-initiated behaviors that promote personal and group success
in activity settings. Such behavior includes adherence to rules and
procedures, etiquette, cooperation, ethical behavior, and positive social
interaction.
b. Demonstrate responsible behavior during participation, function
independently, and positively influence the behavior of others in activity
settings.
Goal 6. The students will demonstrate the ability to understand that
training and conditioning provide opportunities for enjoyment, challenge,
self-expression, and social interaction.
Objectives - The students will be able to:
a. Develop an awareness of the intrinsic values and benefits of
participation in weight training and conditioning that provide personal
meaning. Physical activity can provide opportunity for self-expression and
social interaction and can be enjoyable, challenging, and fun.
b. Be motivated to continue participation in activities throughout adult
life. As a result of the weight training and conditioning program, students
will actively pursue personal fitness programs that meet their own needs.
Goal 7. Physically educated students in weight training and conditioning
will demonstrate the ability to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing
level of physical fitness.
Objectives - The students will be able to:
a. Develop higher levels of basic fitness as needed for many work situations
and active leisure participation. Health related fitness components include
cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance,
flexibility, and body composition. Expectations for studentsí fitness
levels will be established on a personal basis, taking into account
variation in entry levels.
b. Design an appropriate personal fitness program enabling them to achieve
desired levels of fitness.
