About The Teacher
Instructors This course will be taught by co-teachers. Co-teaching is becoming one of the fastest-growing inclusive practices in schools. Co-teaching occurs when two or more professionals jointly deliver substantive instruction to a group of students in a single physical space. It involves the distribution of responsibility for planning, instruction, and evaluation for a classroom of students. Research continues to support the idea that students learn better from two people who have different ways of thinking or teaching. Many educational critics agree that co-teaching is a creative way to connect with and support others to help all children learn. Others say that co-teaching is a way to make schools more effective. One co-teacher, Ms. McArdle, is an expert in both instruction and American literature. The other co-teacher, Ms. Jumper, is currently a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University and is an expert in nonfiction writing. Ms. McArdle grew up in Connecticut. She attended Hofstra University in New York and Towson University in Maryland, where she received her B.A. in English and Secondary Education. She then attended the College of Notre Dame in Maryland, where she received her M.A. in Educational Leadership. Ms. McArdle taught for eight years at Patapsco High School in Baltimore County, and this will be her fifth year teaching at Howard High School. Ms. McArdle completed her National Teacher Certification during the last school year (2008-09) and has numerous certifications in the instruction of SAT strategies. Additionally, Ms. McArdle has been trained and certified by the College Board to be an AP essay scorer for both the AP Language and Composition exam and the AP Literature and Composition exam. Ms. McArdle is currently completing a Ph.D program in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Language Arts Instruction at the University of Maryland (College Park). She lives with her husband, cat, and fabulous pugs in Baltimore City. Ms. Jumper grew up in Central Pennsylvania. She attended the University of Pittsburgh where she received a B.A. in English Writing (Nonfiction) and a Certificate in Film Studies. She spent two years in Kochi, Japan where she taught English language to Japanese students at Kochi Higashi High School. Ms. Jumper is currently completing a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program in Secondary English Education at Johns Hopkins University. She enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, and most outdoor activities.
