My name is Rachel Johns and I am very excited to start my second year at
Howard High School! I previously taught in St. Mary's County, Maryland where
I also went to college. I received my BA in Math at St. Mary's College of
Maryland as well as my Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a focus on
Secondary Mathematics.
Originally I am from Damascus, MD but I am glad to be located in Baltimore
County (makes my drive to work much easier!).
Besides teaching and math I love theatre of all kinds, but more specifically
musical theatre! Feel free to ask me about my favorite shows. . . but NOT
while we are working in class! I am also a huge sports fan!! I love most all
sports, but my favorite are basketball -- Go Mystics! -- and baseball -- Go
O's! I'm also a new fan to football -- Go Ravens!
I love going to support students in their extra-curricular activities, so if
you have a sports game, performance, or team meet, let me know and I will do
my best to come and support you.
I am of the belief that all students can learn math. I believe that it is my
job to help guide students through the learning journey that occurs throughout
the year. Because of this I believe that class should be approached in
different ways, lecture, group work, visually, orally, etc.
My job is to be here for the students and sometimes that means that I will
work through lunch or stay after school to help students. I will do that as
long as I have enough notice to do so.
I believe it is also important for parents/guardians to stay involved so I
will try to send out parent updates every so often so that parents are aware
of what is going on in the class. Parents, please feel free to email me or
call with any questions, concerns or comments you have this year.
Finally, I believe that math can be fun!! I strive to make math as enjoyable
as possible, even for those who have a less favorable attitude. Every lesson
may not be thrilling, but I will try my best to do so!
